Who Are The Pharma Social Media "Wright Brothers (Sisters)"?
I just received an email from MM&M announcing that the Finalists for its 2010 Awards have been chosen. When I clicked on the link in the email, I was taken to a Web page where a silent video showed the “rigorous judging process” (see screen shot at left).
Bristol Ignores California Over AIDS Drug Price Flap
Over the past few weeks, Bristol-Myers Squibb was implored to lower the price of its Reyataz AIDS drug, given the funding crisis facing a growing number of state ADAP programs, which provide AIDS and HIV drugs to the public ( see here ). Among those lobbying the drugmaker is the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which this week banned Bristol reps from its 11,000 or so clinics ( back story )

Former FDA official: don’t expect much guidance on social media
“If the industry thinks the FDA is going to come out with thoughtful and complete guidance on how to use social media in 110 different circumstances, it’s going be very disappointed.” This quote is from Peter Pitts who was associate commissioner for external relations at the Food and Drug Administration between 2002 and 2004 and helped draft the most current guidance on direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising. He also testified at the FDA’s hearings on social media in the fall of 2009

Read the full storyFDA Panel Members Talk About Avandia Conflicts
Twice this week, we have learned that members of the FDA advisory panel convened to review the safety of the Avandia diabetes pill had relationships with drugmakers that had something at stake. One panelist, David Capuzzi, has an ongoing relationship with GlaxoSmithKline as a speaker, although he apparently spoke only once about the diabetes drug ( see here ). And Abraham Thomas has, in the past, given talks about Actos, a rival pill sold by Takeda Pharmaceuticals ( see here ).
Don’t take all the data at face value..use common sense
Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of data in the form of research reports circulating on my website as well as others. A lot of the research is trying to make sense over social media so that marketers can quantify it like they do everything else to determine the ROI and whether it warrants investment. While the Rodale DTC study said that 62% of consumers did not want to hear from pharma in social media (no that does NOT mean that 38% do !) you can’t and shouldn’t assume this applies to all products and brands
PharmaBook – Facebook and Pharma
When social media began to ebb from a media pathway for individuals to connect, to one where institutions and industry began to employ social media as a means of communicating with their constituencies, the pharmaceutical industry, as a highly regulated industry, lagged behind other sectors.
