Avandia Raises Heart Risk But Should Stay on Market, FDA Panel Finds (HealthDay)
HealthDay – WEDNESDAY, July 14 (HealthDay News) — The controversial diabetes drug Avandia does raise the risk of heart attack more than other medications of its kind but should stay on the market with tightened controls, a U.S. government advisory panel recommended late Wednesday.
Avandia: Did science triumph over fear ?
I have to say that I was quite surprised that the FDA agreed to let Avandia stay on the market. Given the increase in media coverage with story headlines like “GSK hid clinical trial data” one has to wonder how could they trust that the data they were reviewing was accurate ? There is a bigger issue here and that is the “perception” that the FDA is the back pocket of the drug industry and and is not looking out for the best interests of patients
Looking For Bad Guys
The search for drug company evil continues as Glaxo’s Avandia is the latest drug in the crosshairs of regulators, the media and lawyers. This diabetes drug is highly effective at regulating blood sugar and is used by millions of type 2 diabetics. It may have a higher risk of causing heart attacks than some alternate therapies and placebo according to some studies.
